Ben has also done investigative reporting for the The Chicago Reporter. He authored the bestselling book Hoop Dreams, and co-authored Race and Politics in Chicago.

    Ben's awards for journalism include a first-place AltWeekly Award from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies; multiple Lisagor Awards from the Chicago Headline Club; the Studs Terkel Award from the Community Media Workshop; and a Chicago Journalist of the Year award from the Chicago Journalists Association.
