Illinois members of the Electoral College will meet in Springfield on Monday, Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. to cast their votes for president of the United States.
The electors will assemble at the state capital building in House hearing room 118. Spectators may watch the electors' constitutionally-mandated ritual, which is open to the public, by going to room 114.
On the same day, electors will also vote in each of the other 49 states and the District of Columbia. Each jurisdiction will send its results to Congress—which, on Jan. 6, will count the votes in open session. The candidate who receives at least 270 electoral votes will go on to be sworn in as president on Jan. 20.
If no candidate gets 270 votes, the U.S House of Representatives will choose the next president. According the National Archives and Records Administration, which oversees the Electoral College process, "the House would elect the President by majority vote, choosing from the three candidates who received the greatest number of electoral votes. The vote would be taken by state, with each state having one vote."
The slate of Illinois electors was decided by the Nov. 8 general election, in which Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton won the majority of Illinois' votes. Accordingly, the state Democratic party's chosen electors (listed below) were appointed to the one-day session of the Electoral College.
Each elector will most likely vote for Clinton as president—but if they don't, they won't have to worry about a penalty. That's because Illinois, unlike some states, doesn't mandate fines or imprisonment for electors who fail to vote for their party's candidate.
